If one assumes that the correlation between mental and visual activity is somehow “primary”, then reasoning about learning and knowledge in terms of UNDERSTANDING IS SEEING should be common ground in conversations between lecturers and students in a university context. In this talk I will discuss the use of SIGHT metaphors in the European Corpus of Academic Talk (EuroCoAT), a corpus of office hours’ consultations between Spanish Erasmus students and their lecturers are five different European universities. The data reveals little alignment between groups of participants. The students use words from the domain of vision less frequently and with different meanings. In this research meeting I will explore quantitative and qualitative differences of three linguistic metaphors: see, look, and focus. I will also talk about the compilation of EuroCoAT and discuss a new and relatively quick way of uncovering metaphorical alignment (or the lack thereof) between speakers using English as a lingua franca using the semantic tool Wmatrix.
