Research Meeting Carlota Moraga Fernández

Event Date: September 19, 2017
Event Time: 9:00-11:00

Dr. Carlota M. Moragas-Fernández works as a postdoctoral researcher at Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona (www.urv.cat/en/) and is part of ASTERISC. Communication Research Group. Between 2013 and 2016 she was engaged in the project ‘The role of metaphor in the social definition and perception of conflictive issues’ funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, in which her PhD thesis [Claiming independence in 140 characters. Uses of Metaphor in the construction of Scottish and Catalan political discourses on Twitter] was framed. In 2014, she was a visiting scholar at the School of Social and Political Science of The University of Edinburgh.

She is currently working on metaphor and political communication regarding the global rise of populism. The first output of this ongoing research project aims to be an article that analyses how traditional Republican politicians and members of Donald Trump’s administration (including the president himself) have framed the first six months of the new government through their use of Twitter. The analysis includes the identification of the political topics they talk about, the references they do to clear populist discourse indicators (such as the in-group or the out-group), and the detection of the metaphorical expressions they use for conceptualizing the before-mentioned topics. The first results of this research will be shown at the presentation she will give next Tuesday (19/09/2017) at the Metaphor Lab research meeting.
