Figurative framing
Figurative framing—when, how and with which functions and effects are metaphor and other figures such as irony and hyperbole used for framing particular messages?
Metaphor, hyperbole, and irony are often used in public discourse by public actors who try to bring their own position to the foreground. However, most studies focus on only one of these figures. The present program studies how metaphor, hyperbole, and irony are used separately and in interconnected ways to frame important societal topics. It focuses on the three dimensions of metaphor (language, cognition, communication) and applies these to irony and hyperbole as well. Furthermore, the figurative framing program strongly connects with social-scientific (and particularly: communication-scientific) research into framing.
