Exploiting metaphor to teach phrasal and prepositional verbs

Topic and scope Why does an alarm go off when it is on? How can a house burn up as it burns down? We explore the metaphoric connections between multiple meanings of phrasal and prepositional verbs, and develop and test approaches to teaching phrasal and prepositional verbs using these connections.
Research question Do learners struggle with more abstract phrasal verbs? What is an abstract phrasal verb? What kind of approach best facilitates learning of English phrasal and prepositional verbs?
