Summer School 2015

Summer school AmsterdamSummer School
Methods for metaphor identification and analysis
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Sunday evening 14 June until Friday evening 19 June 2015

After two successful rounds in one cycle of Winter and Summer schools in 2012 and 2013 with over 30 participants from all over Europe and some countries outside Europe, the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam is delighted to announce the beginning of a new cycle of schools for a new cohort of PhD students and recent post doc researchers interested in training by experts in the field in various methods of metaphor identification and analysis.

The school will be held from Sunday evening 14 June through Friday evening 19 June, and is deliberately piggy-backed on to the RaAM Special Seminar on metaphor in Leiden from 10 through 12 June, so that participants may be able to combine the two events in one trip.

The school will comprise three courses, each course lasting from Monday 15 through Friday 19 June, on the following topics:

09.30 – 11.45
Identifying and Analyzing Visual Metaphor—Introducing VisMIP
Instructor Dr Marianna Bolognesi, Marie Curie Fellow, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

(lunch, offered by Metaphor Lab Amsterdam)

13.00 – 15.15
Analyzing Metaphor in Discourse—Introducing the 5-step method
Instructor Professor Gerard Steen, NWO Vici laureate, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands

(tea, offered by Metaphor Lab Amsterdam)

15.45 – 18.00
Identifying Metaphor in Language—Introducing MIPVU
Instructor Dr Susan Nacey, author of Metaphors in Learner English, Hedmark University College, Norway

Each of the courses will focus on the theoretical motivation and practical application of a specific and concrete technique for metaphor identification and analysis. The courses are introductory: it is our intention to organize a second school in one year from now in order to continue work with the same group of participants at a more advanced level, as we did in the first cycle two years ago.

All courses will take place in one building in the center of Amsterdam, right behind Dam Square: P C Hoofthuis, Spuistraat 134, home of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam.

We invite applications by Monday 9 February 9 AM CET stating your specific interest in the courses, the project you are currently working on in which university, the financial means you have for participating in the school, and including a half page endorsement from your advisor. You should be interested in at least two out of three courses. We have room for 30 participants max.

We are asking a 200 euro fee for participation. Part of this money will be used for deferring instructor expenses, part for lunches, teas and social activities, and part for helping a restricted number of participants coming from less privileged countries to take part in the school. If you wish to apply for a fee waiver because you come from such a less privileged country, please indicate this in your application.

You have to have your own funding for all dinners except one, for your accommodation and for your traveling costs. As with our previous schools, we are making reservations in the Stay Okay Youth Hostel Amsterdam, for about 30 euros per person per night, which you are free to make use of once you are accepted into the school.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at metaphorlabamsterdam@gmail.com. This is also where you should send your application, again, by 9 February, 9 AM CET.

We look forward to hearing from many of you.

Best,

Romy van den Heerik
