MetaPol 2016

International conference

1-2 December 2016

University of Liège, Belgium

The research field of metaphors’ study is kicking and striving. One important dimension of the study of metaphors is their role in the political domain. The study of metaphors in political discourse, in their diversity, is a booming sub-field of metaphors’ study. Scholars from several disciplines seek to identify and analyze political metaphors but also to assess their impact and above all how they are used, by whom and why. The aim of this conference is to bring together these scholars and to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue about metaphors in political discourse. This potentially means bringing together scholars that usually do not meet.

A couple of Metaphor Lab researcher will present their work at MetaPol 2016:

  • Debate “The political impact of metaphors”  – Gerard J. Steen & Paul H. Thibodeau
  • The effects of metaphorical framing of political issues on opinion: A systematic literature review – Amber Boeynaems, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
  • How Refugee Metaphors Influence Our Political Opinions – Britta Brugman, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
