Metaphor Festival ‘ 18: Report

From August 30th to September 1st, the third edition of the Metaphor Festival Amsterdam was organised by the Metaphor Lab Amsterdam. Almost a hundred participants from 25 countries (including Italy, Romania, Iran, Canada, and Indonesia) participated in three days of inspiring academic talks and hands-on workshops.

In more than 50 talks, participants presented their research on metaphor  and other types of figurative language in topics such as religion, politics, health, and literature.  Keynote speeches were delivered by Prof. dr. Ray Gibbs and Prof. dr. Margot van Mulken. Paloma Opazo was awarded the Christina Alm-Arvius Award (for best presentation by a PhD student) for her paper Manipulating sound with the body: Recurrent patterns used by classical orchestra conductors in the expression of musical dynamics. On Saturday, participants enjoyed three workshops focusing on ‘metaphorical minds’: metaphor and mindfulness, metaphor and dementia, and metaphor and song translation.

We would like to thank all participants for making the 2018 edition of the Metaphor Festival Amsterdam such a big success! We hope to see many of you (again) next year!

We would also like to thank our partners Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC), Network Institute, and John Benjamins Publishing Company for supporting the Festival.
